Paso a Paso ‘09 Verdejo, La Mancha

$9.99 btl / $113.89 cs    La Mancha isn’t just Spain’s largest wine region, it’s the largest in the world.  Here wine growers are forced to deal with huge temperature fluctuations (lows to 10° and highs exceed 100° frequently) and also drought. And yet great wines are produced in these unlikely conditions. This Verdejo (we rarely see them under $10!) is an excellent example. Bright, floral aromas are followed by spicy fruit. Interesting almond and mineral notes round out the palate.  “VERY GOOD VALUE”

- The Wine Advocate. Reg: $12

Bodegas La Cana ‘09 Albariño, Rias Baixas

$13.99 btl / $159.49 cs     “La Cana’s just bottled 2009 Albarino reveals the excellence of the vintage in Rias Baixas. Light gold-colored with an unusually fragrant nose of mineral, lemon zest, and spring flowers that jumps from the glass, on the palate it exhibits a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and a lengthy, refreshing finish. Drink it over the next 3 years.” 90 points - The Wine Advocate. Reg: $16

Bodegas Alto Almanzora ‘07 Este

$9.99 btl / $113.89 cs     “A blend of 45% Monastrell, 25% Tempranillo, and the balance Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is sourced from the little-known DO of Almeria located in eastern Andalucia in the south-east of Spain. The wine was aged for six months in French and American oak. Deep purple in color (remarkably dense for its humble price), it offers up a kinky, full-blown nose of smoke, spice box, and wild blueberry. Ripe, succulent, and layered, this bargain-priced, hedonistic effort totally over-delivers. Buy it by the pallet load and drink it over the next three years.”  90 Points - The Wine Advocate

Legón “Roble” ‘07 Ribera del Duero

$12.99 btl / $148.09 cs     “100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) aged for six months in French, American, and Hungarian oak. It offers up an enticing bouquet of cedar, spice box, earth notes, black cherry, and blackberry. This is followed by a smooth-textured, ripe, juicy wine with loads of fruit, an easy-going personality, and a seamless finish. It is a fine introduction to Tempranillo and the DO of Ribera del Duero. ” 90 pts - Wine Advocate.

Supple in texture, offering sweet red fruit flavors and showing no rough edges. A smoky note comes up with air, adding complexity to a nicely persistent, red berry-dominated finish. Extremely easy to drink, and offering excellent depth and clarity for the money.” 89 points - Stephen Tanzer. Reg: $13
